PHYSIOTHERAPY
Interferential
Electro-Stimulation Therapy
This
is a therapeutic treatment to aid in the relief of pain and
the promotion of soft tissue healing. With this therapy,
tiny amounts of electrical impulses are induced into the
tissues in the vicinity of the injury. Where these waves
intersect below the surface of the skin, a low-frequency
stimulation is created. This prompts the body to secrete
endorphins and other natural killers to help relieve pain.
Most
patients find this therapy to be extremely beneficial and
describe the treatment as a faint tingling sensation. It is
most often used for pain relief and to aid in reducing the
swelling of soft tissues. Ligament sprains, muscle strains,
an spasms often respond to this treatment, helping to reduce
atrophy and increase blood circulation. This therapy
releases the body's natural pain killers and accelerates the
healing process.
Electro
Muscle Stimulation
This
therapy is a special form of electrical current that is
administered at the site of soft tissue injury, especially
muscles, for the relief of pain. Small amounts of electrical
current are induced into the tissues for the purpose of
reducing swelling. This widely used technique safely
strengthens muscles and reduces painful symptoms.
Patients
generally feel a slight tingling sensation at first. Since
your body may become accustomed to the initial setting, the
intensity may be raised during the course of your 10-20
minute treatment for maximum healing effect.
This
form of therapy has been proven an effective form of pain
relief. It is recommended in cases involving swelling and
inflammation. It promotes general muscle tone and speeds the
healing process.
Ultrasound
Obviously
the number of treatments vary with different conditions and
individuals. Chronic problems generally require more
treatment than acute ones. Some patients notice an immediate
improvement after the first treatment, whereas others may
not notice any effect until the seventh or eighth visit.
It's been shown that a certain percentage of patients
receive maximum benefit up to three months following a
course of therapy.
A
small number of patients will experience a worsening of
symptoms, as the body's energies are returning to normal.
This is usual and no need for alarm. It is followed by
improvement. Researchers internationally agree the usual
number of treatments is between eight and sixteen. The usual
frequency is between two and four times a week.
